Ethical Considerations for Mental Health Professionals Working with Trans and Non-binary Youth and Their Families

In a world where issues related to gender are becoming part of the general discourse, we see a new professional field organically emerging. Historically, gender has been situated in the context of medicine and mental health. We are now finding that there are some aspects of these historical practices that trans, non binary, and gender-expansive youth do not find supportive nor do they fit their needs and experiences. This presentation will discuss ethical considerations all professionals working with trans, non binary and gender-expansive youth should explore. This workshop will use group discussion and activities to have attendees look closely at their own experience and development of gender and how this may show up in their work with trans, non binary, and gender-expansive youth. Through this workshop, individuals will gain a frame for understanding how to ethically approach supporting trans, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth given their personal experience and professional training. What is inside your scope of practice? What isn’t? This workshop will help new professionals to understand their areas of growth and expertise, while also providing concrete tools and tips for working with trans, non-binary, and agender youth.
