I am an Assistant Professor at Ryerson University in the School of Child and Youth Care. I have been a front-line practitioner with children and youth for over 20 years in the roles of social worker, advocate, and elementary school teacher. My current research is a mix method province-wide study on the access-to-justice needs of trans people in Ontario. This is the second province-wide study to be conducted in Ontario and the largest study of its kind to be executed globally. We collected extensive demographic information, well-being data, documented experiences of discrimination/legal need, and examined the impact of these experiences. Approximately one-third of respondents are trans-youth (ages 16-24 years old). I am currently developing a trans-youth led, community-based, study on the needs of trans youth within their life-spaces (home, peers, community, school, etc.). I am also seeking to develop a centralized curriculum development tool for community service professional programs (child and youth care, public health, early childhood education, etc..). In the fall, I am opening up a small practice to support trans children, youth, and their families. I would love to connect with anyone to discuss the findings of our research and to learn from the wonderful work you are doing to serve trans children and youth.
